Calmes Spring is located near the bridge on Old Boonesboro Road a little south of Winchester. On the east side of the bridge, a small stream flows into Lower Howard's Creek through two handsome water gaps with stone posts. The spring lies a short distance up the small stream. Kentucky's pioneer settlers knew of this never failing spring, which became part of Robert McMillan's land claim. McMillan raised a crop of corn there in 1776, which under Virginia's land law, entitled him to 1,400 acres of land around the spring.

When you drive by Alfred Smith’s property on North Fifth Street in Danville, you immediately notice how neat the house is and how beautiful the marigolds and other flowers are that line the walk to the front door. But something else stands out — a yard sign with religious messages on both side. One side, the message warns that death is the wages of sin. On the other side, the message promises that salvation will lead to eternal life. As proud as he is of his immaculate lawn and handsome house — he bought it more than three decades ago as a condemned structure, then used his construction skills to turn it into a showcase for the neighborhood — Smith believes the most important thing on his property is that sign.
