LEXINGTON -George Rogers Clark High School graduate and Transylvania sophomore Shamara Burton recently participated in Transylvania University's Middle School Girls Visit in celebration of Women's History Month. Burton hosted one of 40 female students from nearby middle schools. Each middle school girl had the opportunity to attend Transy classes, tour campus and eat lunch in the dining hall with her Transylvania host. The girls also enjoyed scene selections from "Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?"

LEXINGTON - Freshman guard Allison Denbow had a midcourt steal and layup with less than 10 seconds left in overtime Tuesday night to give the Centre women a 62-60 win over Transylvania. The Centre men couldn't complete the sweep, falling 66-61 to the Pioneers in the second game at the Beck Center. In overtime, Centre (2-5) took a 60-56 lead with 1:29 left, but Transylvania (1-4) tied the game with 39 seconds left before Denbow's steal and score gave Centre the win. "It was just a great game, a great effort on part of both teams," Centre coach Wendie Austin-Robinson said.

The Centre College men will take on Capital (Ohio) University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the College of Wooster (Ohio) at 6 p.m. Friday. Capital (19-8) is the champion of the Ohio Athletic Conference. If the Colonels win, they play the winner of Transylvania at Wooster on Saturday. Centre coach Greg Mason will be a guest on the Joe and Denny Show Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. The show can be heard at 105.1 FM.

Teresa Johnstone scored in the second minute of overtime to give the Centre College field hockey team a 1-0 home win over Transylvania on Thursday. Centre (7-2) took 22 shots in regulation, and 15 of them were on goal, but the Colonels were unable to score before Johnstone struck in overtime. It was her team-high 11th goal of the year, coming off an assist from Rachel Watkins. Centre goalkeeper Patty Cowley had six saves to help the Colonels win their fourth straight.

Centre College freshman Liz Starr has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's swimmer of the week. Starr won both the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.93 and the 200 individual medley in 2:15.78 against Transylvania last week. Starr shattered the school butterfly record of 2:16.48 previously held by former Centre All-American Rachel Duncan. Centre travels to Wilmington, Ohio, to face Wilmington College Friday, and then to Indianapolis Saturday to compete against Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis (IUPUI)

Danville graduate Maddie Meckes will return to her hometown for two soccer games this weekend when her St. Mary's (Ind.) plays in a two-game event at Centre College. St. Mary's will play Centre at 7 p.m. Saturday and Transylvania at noon here Sunday in the Centre College Showcase. Meckes was the only freshman to start in the Belles' season opener Tuesday against Holy Cross (Ind.), which they won 3-0. Centre's roster includes one local player, Boyle County alumnus and current junior Sarah Hall, who started in the Colonels' 4-1 win over Asbury on Tuesday.
