Danville graduate Maddie Meckes will return to her hometown for two soccer games this weekend when her St. Mary's (Ind.) plays in a two-game event at Centre College. St. Mary's will play Centre at 7 p.m. Saturday and Transylvania at noon here Sunday in the Centre College Showcase. Meckes was the only freshman to start in the Belles' season opener Tuesday against Holy Cross (Ind.), which they won 3-0. Centre's roster includes one local player, Boyle County alumnus and current junior Sarah Hall, who started in the Colonels' 4-1 win over Asbury on Tuesday.

The Centre College baseball team was on the short end of a slugfest Wednesday to visiting Transylvania, as the teams combined for 35 hits and 29 runs in a 19-10 win over Colonels. Eric Moore went 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, an RBI and scored three times to lead Centre (15-23), which had 16 hits. Brandon Rosen was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple two RBIs and three runs, Jake Jones had a home run and scored, Andy Placido was 2-for-2, Justin Basham doubled and drove in two runs and Kevin McGee had a double.

Seven of eight Transylvania pitchers held Centre scoreless Wednesday as the Colonels lost 7-1 to Transy at Applebee's Park in Lexington. Centre (18-17) had seven hits but didn't score until the eighth inning, by which time Transy (26-9) had built a 4-0 lead. Transy used seven relief pitchers for one inning each after starter Jeff Hatfield threw two innings. Centre starter Jake Jones allowed four runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings, and reliever Aaron Herbert gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Transy answered Centre's score and put the game out of reach.

The Centre College baseball team exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday to help the Colonels to a 12-6 win over visiting Transylvania at Gary Wright Field. John Clark was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Steven Proctor was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs and Jose Ordonez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brandon Rosen, Cory Crowdis and Kevin McGee all drove in runs for Centre (11-10). Centre trailed 4-2 before Clark singled in two runs as the Colonels scored seven runs on three hits and took advantage of two Transylvania errors.

The Centre College women finished in second place and the men tied for third Thursday in the Jim English-Centre College Invitational at Danville Country Club. Emily Bachert led the Centre women and was second overall with a 39-35-74, while Tyler Griffith was tied for eighth on the men's side at 35-38-73. Bellarmine won the women's title with a team score of 324, one stroke ahead of Centre. Lindsey Wilson won the men's trophy at 287, seven strokes below Centre. MEN Team scores - 1. The Centre College men's and women's tennis teams lost to Transylvania on Tuesday at Lexington. Centre's men were edged 5-4 when Transy won the No. 3 doubles match. Hari Vasupuram had one of two singles wins for the Colonels (1-3) and was in on one of the two doubles wins. The women dropped a 7-2 decision. Singles wins by Molly Housley and Sarah Saneii were the only victories for the Colonels (1-3), while Transy's wins included a doubles victory by Mercer County High School graduate Kathy Shewmaker.
