Downtown Danville is gearing up for a scary, fun evening to celebrate Halloween on Oct. 30, including activities that ghouls and goblins of all ages will enjoy. The evening kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with the traditional trick or treating on Main Street during which more than 20 downtown merchants will give away candy in front of their businesses. Thanks to Danville Police Department, the street will be closed on Main, between Second and Fourth streets. Trick or treating is only the start of fun that will await visitors to downtown.

It’s October of an election year, and the politicians are once again playing “trick or treat.” Costumes and masks are all a part of the elaborate drama as voters try to figure out what’s real and what is illusion. Can we ever really know the truth? I’m not by nature a skeptic. My husband would attest to the fact that I’m sometimes surprisingly gullible. I like the idea that I can trust people, and I want to believe that there is some good, even in a politician.

City Manager Ron Scott announced today that Danville's official hours of celebrating Halloween would be changed, due to the expected impact of Hurricane Sandy on Danville Tuesday night. “The safety of our children was the main factor in moving the Halloween celebration from Tuesday, October 30 to Wednesday, October 31”, Scott said in a written press release.  “On Tuesday afternoon it will be raining with winds blowing a steady 23-25 MPH, with gusts over 45 MPH.  With the wind chill, the effective temperature will be below 30 degrees.  Visibility will be impaired by the conditions, to the point it will be hazardous to be out, either walking or driving.

It turns out that $100 bills bearing Ben Franklin's likeness are not the only thing counterfeited these days. So is the economic system that Franklin and his fellow patriots worked so diligently to create. Actually, our founders did not create capitalism - the voluntary exchange of goods and services that leads to profit. It already existed. Rather, they formed a Constitution and system of government that encouraged and protected it. They wanted as little government intervention as possible.

I was looking at the trick-or-treat schedule the other day in the paper, and I noticed that Harrodsburg is the only city that is being sensible by having its on Saturday night. Who schedules these times? I mean, c'mon, not only are the hours set for Monday night, which is a school night, and Lord knows that the kids have plenty of homework to do, but some of the working class do not even get home in the “so called” trick-or-treat hours. Don't get me wrong - I am all for celebrating Halloween on the day of, but I think it would make more sense to let the kids go out Saturday night.

At Winchester First United Methodist Church, the annual Fall Fire event is more than a festival. For the congregation, Fall Fire is a way to give back to a supportive community. “We just want it to be a fun event, a family event, for people to come and have a good time,” said Nancy Jaeger, Fall Fire committee chairman. Fall Fire is from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Winchester Plaza, at the church's First Fire campus. The event is free to the community. Children are invited to wear Halloween costumes for trunk-or-treating, and there will be a petting zoo, pony rides, a rock wall, food and music.

Josh Settle had a hat trick Friday to lead the Centre College men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Austin 4-0 at Sherman, Texas. Settle, a junior who had only two goals all season before Friday's game, scored four minute in off an assist from Austin Hall to give Centre (7-3-1, 2-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) a quick lead. He scored again in the 28th minute off an assist from Cameron Miller, then capped the scoring off a Jeremy Carlson header early in the second half.
