Dear Editor, How much sense does it make to have Trick or Treat in Danville and Boyle County on Friday night when both teams are playing football away that night? Half the town was gone. Parents, coaches, volunteers, school personnel, and children associated with the programs would like to participate in the festivities, too. Next year, planners should think this through a little. Dear Editor: Everywhere in this country, Halloween has been designated as Oct. 31. Preprinted calendars list Halloween as Oct. 31. All areas in and around Danville are celebrating Halloween on Oct. 31. Why, then, is Danville celebrating Halloween on Thursday? I have lived here for 28 years and can count on one hand the number of times trick or treating actually coincided with Halloween in Danville. Friday seems like the perfect night for trick or treating with no school the following day. Some have told me that Danville kids get to double-dip by going to the surrounding communities on a different night.

Trick or treat, scheduled for Oct. 31 in Clark County, is designed to give young children a safe activity and "treats" on Halloween night. However, it is the "trick" part of trick or treat that can make Halloween a dangerous time of year. Halloween is traditionally the worst single day of the year for vandalism and animal cruelty. These crimes are committed most often by teenagers and young adults. Vandalism and animal cruelty are not pranks. They are crimes that are punishable by law. It is the duty of the County Attorney's Office to prosecute these misdemeanors in district court.
