TODAY - Conkwright Middle School, special called meeting of site-based decision-making council, 8 a.m., school library. - Gov. Ernie Fletcher, bus stop, 9:45 a.m., in front of Bridges & Lane Hardware and Granny's Country Kitchen, North Main Street and Broadway. - Troop 54, Trinity United Methodist Church, collecting food items, 6-8 p.m. during trick or treat. Scouts will be in uniform and accompanied by an adult. Food items also can be dropped off at the church. - Winchester Elks Lodge No. 2816, Bypass Road, participating in Trick or Treat, 6-8 p.m. Elks members will be outside the lodge hall to distribute the treats.

Fall Celebration at Pleasant View Pleasant View Baptist Church will be having a Fall Celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be games, activities, a hayride, food and lots of candy. All children up through 6th grade and their parents are invited. Crab Orchard Community Meal The Crab Orchard Baptist Church will once again be offering their Community Meal for the Crab Orchard area. The meals will be served the second Tuesday of each month, beginning Tuesday, Nov. 14. The Fellowship Hall will open and start serving at 6 p.m. The church is located on Stanford Street.

Moreland Fire Department chili supper The Moreland Fire Department will hold an all-you-can-eat chili and bean supper on the corner of 1194 and 2141 on Saturday, Oct. 18 starting at 5 p.m. Cost is $5. For more information, call (606) 346-2391. All proceeds will go to 2008 fire prevention. Crab Orchard monument fund-raiser A bean and chili supper will be held Friday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Broughtontown Community Center for upkeep and additions for the Crab Orchard Veteran's Monument.

It turns out that $100 bills bearing Ben Franklin's likeness are not the only thing counterfeited these days. So is the economic system that Franklin and his fellow patriots worked so diligently to create. Actually, our founders did not create capitalism - the voluntary exchange of goods and services that leads to profit. It already existed. Rather, they formed a Constitution and system of government that encouraged and protected it. They wanted as little government intervention as possible.
