Members of the Clark County 4-H Sewing Group have spent the last year learning new skills in the area of project construction using new sewing techniques. Those skills have been put to the test as judges evaluated their works. For the last year leading up to the competition, sewing group members could complete a variety of projects, including clothing and non-clothing options. Beginner sewers completed laundry bags, backpack purses and pajama bottoms, while more advanced youth learned how to sew anything from duffle bags to dresses.

Throughout the tournament, there was a lot of talk about great players. Among them, Jarrod Polson stood tall. I had a number of conversations about Polson with people I had never met. Mostly I took questions like, "Where has he been hiding?" "Nowhere," I'd tell them. "He's been playing basketball a few miles outside of Lexington all season. " I suppose the least polite, but most apt answer, would have been to reply, "Where have you been hiding?" If anyone had been paying attention all season, they would have noticed that Polson is a fantastic ball handler, an unselfish teammate, an accurate passer and a legitimate scoring threat from anywhere.

Last week I wrote about calming your dog if he is afraid of loud noises. Then, I received a phone call asking why I didn't mention Cesar Millan's method of letting other dogs retrain the traumatized animal. Millan is the nationally known dog trainer also called the dog whisperer. The caller also asked why I didn't use Millan's method, "You do have dogs, don't you?" To answer the first part of the question, Millan does use his pack of dogs, all especially trained and reliable. Yes, a pack of dogs can set an example for a new dog and change errant behavior.

Dear Editor, How much sense does it make to have Trick or Treat in Danville and Boyle County on Friday night when both teams are playing football away that night? Half the town was gone. Parents, coaches, volunteers, school personnel, and children associated with the programs would like to participate in the festivities, too. Next year, planners should think this through a little. This Friday is Halloween. No matter which day your town or city celebrates this holiday, there are certain precautions you need to take with your pets. First, please keep your pets safely corralled inside some building on the night of the festivities. Animals are not used to the costumes, flashlights and squeals of joy that are part of trick-or-treating. They may hide, run away, get hit by a car carrying children to a new neighborhood or snarl if they think they are cornered by the newest witch on the block.
