Tryouts for the East Jessamine volleyball team will be July 15, from 5-9 p.m. at the high school gym. All players must have a current KHSAA sports physical and come dressed ready to play. Bate Middle School girls basketball team is having open gym/tryouts in preparation for the start of the season Aug. 11. Any girl in grades 5 through 8 when school start can come to the open gym from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Bate gym or Thursday and Thursday at the Danville High School gym.

Eight George Rogers Clark High School band students advanced through the first round for the Kentucky Music Educators Association All-State Band tryouts this week. Students advancing to the second round of tryouts are, from left, Luke Long, alto saxophone; William Mason, tenor saxophone; Chris Wheeler, trombone; Lawrence Williams, percussion; Zach Peterson, tuba; J. D. Rison, percussion; Katie Long, clarinet; and Justin Carrus, alto saxophone. The second round of auditions will be Dec. 10 in Elizabethtown.

Bate Middle School will have tryouts for its girls basketball teams July 21-24 at the middle school from 5:30-7:30 p.m. daily. The tryouts will be for the sixth, seventh and eighth grade teams. Danville coach Judie Mason says any girl enrolled in the Danville school system may attend tryouts.

Bate Middle School cheerleading tryouts will be Monday through May 5 in the gym. There will be a parent information meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday in the gym. If you ever dreamed of being a professional athlete, the Harrodsburg Tankers could help you make that dream come true. The Tankers will be hosting open tryouts for this season's team, Saturday March 28 at 9 a.m. The KBDL (Kentucky Basketball Developmental League) does not charge for tryouts. Participants are expected to show up dressed to play. If selected, players will play a 12-game schedule in front of scouts from professional leagues from all around the world. "This is like a three month combine," Tankers General Manager Chris Darland said.

Three area girls basketball players are among 38 players who have been invited to try out of the Kentucky All-Star team. Kasey Young of Danville, Emily Fox of Lincoln County and Cassidy Martin of Mercer County are three of the five 12th Region players selected for the tryouts. Also picked were Brittany Warren of Pulaski County and Wayne County's Jessica Hardin. Invitations will also be issued to player of the year selections from each of Kentucky¿s 16 regions not on originally invited.

Basketball - The Winchester YMCA¿is taking sign-ups for its basketball leagues through Oct. 28 at the Fitness Center. The cost is $45 for members and $50 for non-members. Leagues are as follows: Preschool boys and girls; kindergarten boys and girls; first-grade boys and girls; 2nd- and 3rd- boys and girls; 4th-6th-grade boys; 3rd-6th-grade girls; 7th-9th-grade boys and 10th-12th-grade boys. Carter Dunn of Hustonville has never forgotten the disappointment he felt four years ago after failing to make the Kentucky U13 Youth Soccer Team of the Olympic Development Program (ODP). Dunn has come far since that fateful day. Hard work and lots of practice have paid off for Dunn as he made the Lincoln County High School varsity roster and began play in club soccer. But, most importantly, he redeemed himself by making the 2012 Kentucky U17 Soccer Team in the Olympic Development Program.

National College grads Ten Winchester residents were among the students receiving degrees from the National College Lexington Campus during ceremonies May 24 including Constance R. Covington-Gatewood, Melissa D. Hardy, Michele R. Mullins, Lindsey H. Polley,  Irita S. Price, Stacye T. Redmon, Donald Skinner, Corseaca A. Taylor, Sandra L. Watkins and Justin T. Witt. Elica D. Anderson of Winchester was among the students receiving degrees at the National College Richmond Campus during ceremonies also on May 24. Conkwright transition camp Conkwright Middle School will have its sixth grade transition camp Wednesday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. for all traditional and magnet team students.
