One of the things Brandon and I were most excited about when we bought our house was being able to invite people over. In fact, I was so excited that I volunteered us to host Thanksgiving dinner this year for both our families. Since we moved into the house, I've done a lot more cooking, and I¿haven't managed to poison either of us yet. Yet. Seriously though, I thought, and still think I am up to the challenge. I plan to cook the whole dinner with a few minor exceptions.

It's not unusual for Centre College students to study abroad. However, junior Taylor Rockwell got more than just a classroom education during his recent study in Turkey. Not only did he learn about the Turkish language and customs in the classroom under the direction of religion professor Tom McCollough, he also found a way to play football for the Bilken (University) Judges in Western Anatolia. Rockwell said the league he played in started about 11 years ago, but players just started wearing pads and equipment a few years ago. The schools now furnish the essential equipment, but most players have to spend their own money to import quality equipment from the United States or make do with what is available, including soccer shoes rather than football cleats.

Tamer Turkman says he doesn’t know any of the details surrounding the latest allegations that Enes Kanter was paid to play basketball in Turkey, but he does know he was surprised Wednesday when he read the news about the Kentucky freshman. “I woke up and was amazed with what I read,” said Turkman, founder and president of International Student Service who lives in Baltimore. “I must have read about 60 or 70 articles about it. I hope it works out, but it sure seems like a big mess today.

For years now, each fall as Thanksgiving approaches, my wife has been suggesting that we dispense with the time-honored tradition of wives cooking huge meals in the kitchen while husbands wander around the house aimlessly looking for something to do but never actually saying, "Is there anything I can do?" Why not, she asks each fall, just deep fry a turkey outside? Every year, we discuss it (in reality, I just shout NO! at the top of my lungs) and end up agreeing to follow the hallowed traditions of the season.

Kentucky senior guard Patrick Sparks thought if he concentrated on being a complete player that he would earn a spot on the United States team that will play in the World University Games. Apparently he was right because Sparks was named Wednesday to the 12-man team that will play in Izmir, Turkey, Aug. 12-22. "This was a very tough decision to pick this team," Villanova coach Jay Wright, the USA head coach, said following practice in Colorado Springs, Colo. "We have an entire team that has a great attitude and they all are very committed to their teammates and coaches.

The Salvation Army wants you to be an Angel of Hope, not only for the Christmas season but throughout the year. That's how Capt. Zachary Bell puts it. Most urgent is the need for the public to join in donating to the Angel Trees throughout the communities that the Danville office serves. While many industries, businesses, financial institutions and retail outlets take part in the program each year at Christmastime, this year the Danville Salvation Army is featuring the workers at the American Greetings plant on Lebanon Road in Danville.

100 YEARS AGO - 1911 Burglars broke into F.T. Burke's store in Junction City. They gained entry by boring the rear door and making an opening so they could remove an iron bar. They broke the cash register and stole five or six dollars. Mr. Burke carries such extensive stock that he cannot estimate the number of other articles that may have been taken. All of Danville's neighboring towns have passed stringent ordinances prohibiting the use of fireworks next week.

On Friday, Margie Dievert is going to serve an early Thanksgiving meal, but it will be a tad bigger than the one most of us put on our dinner tables Nov. 27. "I'll be using 12 turkey breasts and four whole turkeys, plus gallons and pounds of ingredients to make dressing and the trimmings," she said. The turkey won't be the only entree, however. "There will be scores of cheeseburgers," she said. "Some people actually don't like turkey or dressing. " About 450 students eat lunch every day at the Danville High School cafeteria.
