"Abortion ... was probably regarded by the average Roman of the later days of paganism much as Englishmen in the last century regarded convivial excesses, as certainly wrong, but so venial as scarcely to deserve censure," observed 19th century historian W.E.H. Lecky. Some students of history have suggested modern America has much in common with ancient Rome just prior to its fall. If Lecky is correct, there is no doubt the United States possesses the same view of its unborn citizens as that of its once powerful predecessor.

Normally Clark County Public Library youth service librarian Misty Strain, seated second from left, is reading a book to the little children attending Story Time. But this week's program was about and in honor of her and her baby boy due on June 23. Renee Bush, head of youth services at the library, was reading a book to the children about an unborn child to prepare them for Stain's absence when her baby is born.

Circuit Judge Jeffrey T. Burdette last week denied Carolyn Foley's motion for an appeal bond, which would have set her free pending the outcome of her appeal. A jury convicted Ms. Foley in August 2007 of manslaughter and fetal homicide in the traffic deaths of Brandy Ison Simpson and her unborn child. Ms. Foley was sentenced to a combined 18 years in prison. Judge Burdette had previously denied a motion from Ms. Foley's lawyer for shock probation. Ms. Foley represented herself on the appeal bond, however.

Dear Editor, We should support banning smoking in public buildings out of concern for pregnant women and their unborn children. Smoke puts unborn babies at risk. Smokers' babies are more likely to have a variety of problems including low birth weight and learning and other neurological problems. Although the risk is not as high when second hand smoke is involved, it still is very significant, depending on the amount of exposure. Many pregnant women need to work. They should not be faced with the choice of leaving a job in a restaurant, for example, or nurturing their unborn child on toxic air. Many pregnant women, like everyone else, like to go to restaurants and other public places.

Carolyn Foley left Judge Jeffrey Burnett's circuit courtroom Friday with a smile on her face, but not because she was getting out of jail. Burnett declined to reduce Foley's $100,000 cash bond to the $50,000 property bond that Foley's public defender had suggested. Deputies returned Foley to the Lincoln County Regional Jail, where she has been since Nov. 23, when she allegedly drove the pickup that ran off highway 642 near Crab Orchard, hit a concrete bridge barrier and burst into flames.

STANFORD - A Lincoln County grand jury indicted two Lincoln County residents Friday over fatal vehicle crashes that killed their passengers. Carolyn Foley, 27, of Crab Orchard, was charged with second-degree manslaughter and third-degree fetal homicide in the Nov. 22 deaths of Brandy Ison Simpson and her unborn child. Simpson, also of Crab Orchard, was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by Foley on Ky. 643 near Crab Orchard. Also in the vehicle was Foley's 3-week-old baby, who was not injured in the crash.

LIBERTY - Casey Circuit Judge James G. Weddle on Thursday threw out a case against a woman charged with endangering her unborn baby by snorting cocaine just before the baby was born, but then said he hoped his ruling would be challenged. "I hope the Attorney General's office would appeal this and take it to the Supreme Court, which is where I think it ought to go," Weddle said from the bench after dismissing a charge of first-degree wanton endangerment against Ina Cochran. Cochran, 37, of Creston Water Tower Road, gave birth to a daughter, Cheyenne, on Dec. 29. Both mother and child tested positive for cocaine in their urine the next day, which led to Cochran's indictment, said Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright.

Don't place conditions on the gift of life Dear Editor: Life is a gift from Almighty God, our Creator. Who are we to say "No thank you" to this gift? We are so caught up in our "choices" and our "rights" that we have forgotten who we truly belong to - our God. It is so ironic that while the world was witnessing the tremendous sufferings of Pope John Paul II during his final days on earth, that here in the United States we were debating the ultimate fate of Terry Schiavo.

Dear Editor: Janet Fluty is absolutely correct when it comes to criticism of George Bush's pro-life views. I find it funny also that many liberal leaders in our country decry the war in Iraq as the killing of innocent civilians, as well as accusing the military of assassinating Saddam Hussein's sons, all the while turning a blind eye to the most innocent of all - unborn children. They are more concerned that al-Qaida members or other terrorists be treated fairly when captured than for an unborn child to have the right to live.

Dear Editor: Once again, Frank Durham is criticizing President Bush because his pro-life stance just isn't good enough for Mr. Durham - this time saying he has changed his position since 1978. Let's look at why someone may have had a change of heart on this issue over a course of 26 years. Much has been learned about abortion and fetal development since the Supreme Court legalized abortion on demand in 1973 (Roe v. Wade). The Roe court at that time said they could not answer the question of when life begins.
