News from God's Big Backyard: Our Bible school was blessed with eager, attentive children and willing workers. Our theme was been "Service". Our focus: Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and your neighbor as yourself. Each evening we took an imaginary trip to someone's backyard. Monday, we walked along the Nile and visited Pharaoh's backyard. Tuesday we traveled though the market of Capernaum to get to a home that had a big hole in the roof. Wednesday, we took the 17 mile hike down the rugged road from Jerusalem to Jericho to an inn. We were very careful to walk quietly past the caves of the robbers.

A few days ago I was leafing through some ancient family albums. Been doing a lot of that lately. Like taking laxatives and napping in a recliner, album-leafing is a sign of aging. So is memory loss and that is one reason I leaf through albums. But I came across a photo of an experience I wish I could forget. It was a picture of the one and only Vacation Bible School class I had ever been a member of. There were two dozen smiling cherubs and one little boy who looked like he had been ordered to kiss a girl.

When describing a hectic scene, the term "beehive" is often used by journalists. A visit to the Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church on the Danville bypass earlier this month showed why that word is not a cliche'. But what seemed like a frenzy of activity at first blush actually was organized chaos. At 9 a.m. on the opening session on a Monday, scores of children entered the building, and each one was greeted by a VBS volunteer who welcomed them, gave them identification lanyards and pointed them to their classrooms.
