For nearly half a century, Clark County’s only public secondary school has been named George Rogers Clark High School — a tribute to the general for whom our county is also named. The school district, however, is building a new high school on Boonesboro Road, and its leaders want to know what you think it should be called. You can go to GRC’s website, http://www.grchs.com/ to fill out a form. You may either click on the box to vote to keep the name as it is: George Rogers Clark, or go to the line below and offer another suggestion.

At an event designed to highlight the strength and athleticism of horses, Melody Farris Jackson is making sure that a little of their grace and artistry makes it to the forefront, as well. Charged with creating set designs, souvenir and promotional posters, lapel pins and scarves for the opening ceremonies of the World Equestrian Games, Jackson decided to showcase her view of horses, one that includes music, art and dancing. “My idea was to show the horse from plan view,” Jackson said, referring to an overhead view, rather than the traditional side or front views usually used when depicting horses.

Dear Editor, I wrote to you on April 21 to express concerns about vehicles being parked on Main Street in Danville during parades at the Great American Brass Band Festivals. The setting for the parade given on Main Street for 2007's Great American Brass Band Festival was a welcome departure from past settings. Why was this so? The answer is that parking was prohibited on Main Street on the morning of Saturday, June 9. My wife and I were among the throng that watched the parade.

Dear Editor: Bravo! to The Advocate Messenger for allowing Brian Cooney to contribute his opinion to the paper! I have to agree with Tom Handloser whose letter on Aug. states that Mr. Cooney is biased. He is an unwavering, unapologetic Democrat. But I don't think his bias makes him unqualified to be a contributing writer, as Mr. Handloser suggests. If this were true, would Mr. Handloser also disqualify Cal Thomas, Rich Lowry, George Will, Kathleen Parker, Thomas Sowell and Charles Krauthammer, who are all staunch conservatives and the only regular contributors to this paper?

LANCASTER - Garrard County school board expressed concern Tuesday over where the new Ky. 52 has been placed in relation to Paint Lick Elementary School. Board Chairman Joe Brown said the height of the new road is much less than the old road, making the view of the school much more difficult. "It's way down where the other road was, 30 feet at one point. It's a shock," he said. Brown said when the road is finished, the sight of the school will be very reduced. He said the state Department of Highways and the contractor may possibly do more grading to improve the problem.

LEXINGTON - Even though Kentucky coach John Calipari insisted Wednesday that he was “not hearing” the talk about his team being a lock to win next year's national championship, he said he could “imagine” the talk is out there. Apparently he's the only one that doesn't know for sure the talk is out there even if the Wildcats didn't get Andrew Wiggins on Tuesday. “It's probably because people are really rooting for us to do well. So that's probably part of the reason. They want us to do so well, they're putting that out there to help us build this team right,” joker Calipari.

While she was training in Colorado for the Jennie Carol's Memorial Mother's Day 5K Run, Allison Tamme would often think about Jennie Tarter and her unexpected death in 2008 that led to friends starting this event in downtown Danville to honor her memory by raising money for BackPack Kids. “Training in Colorado is a whole different animal. The altitude and hills are no joke out there,” she said. “I would be tired and my ankle or knee would be hurting, but then I would think how she would love to be out running with her sons.

Over a month ago Huntington (W.Va.) Prep sophomore point guard Nevell Provo said that teammate Andrew Wiggins had Kansas No. 1 on his recruiting list. That came as a bit of a shock because the logic was that Kentucky and Florida State were the leaders for the nation's top high school prospect. However, Provo's proclamation came true Tuesday when the 6-8 Wiggins announced he was going to Kansas and not UK, Florida State or North Carolina. So why Kansas? Provo said at the time Wiggins had listed the pros and cons of each team on his recruiting list and Kansas was the clear winner.

Andy Murray was a fierce competitor when he played fullback at the University of Kentucky and remains a hard-core UK fan. That's why he's become a huge Mark Stoops' fan already and believes that Conner quarterback Drew Barker will pick the Wildcats over South Carolina and Tennessee Friday when he announces his college choice. “He is a lock in my opinion. Kid is a blue blood,” said Murray. Because Murray's son plays at Simon Kenton, he's not been able to get out in northern Kentucky to see Barker play.

When the Players Championship starts Thursday at Stadium Course at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla., there will once again be a face familiar to area golf fans. No, it's not Tiger Woods, who will be playing in his first tournament since the Masters or any of the other big-name PGA stats. Instead, it will be Stanford golfer Jessica Cornelius. This will be her ninth year walking inside the ropes keeping scores and notifying TV of the important shots/events that happen with her group.

Southeastern Conference opponents apparently are not quite ready to concede the 2014 conference title to coach John Calipari's team, much less accepting that Kentucky should be the odds-on favorite to win the national title. South Carolina signee Sidnarius Thornwell played in the Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic  in Louisville last month. He had 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 16 minutes. He also made it clear that while he respected Kentucky, he didn't fear Calipari's team or No. 1 recruiting class.

Rather than feel miffed over not getting an immediate scholarship offer from Kentucky, Bowling Green receiver Nacarius Fant is more than willing to come to UK's camp on June 8 and show what he can do. Kentucky offensive coordinator Neal Brown recently watched Fant practice and told him he liked his “footwork” and other things. “He wants me to come to camp June 8 and compete against SEC type cornerbacks in the 2014 (recruiting) class,” said Fant. “Once he sees that - and he has to make sure I am the type receiver he's looking for - and I prove I can play one on one versus elite players, then the offer will come.

Back when Larry Warford played for Madison Central, offensive line coach Mark Scenters had a unique, but effective, way of motivating his star lineman - a Wendy's Baconator. “We used to have a running deal that if any lineman graded out well and played really well, it would result in him getting a big burger,” said Scenters, now the head coach at Garrard County. “He got a few for sure, and probably deserved more than I could afford. At least now he shouldn't have to worry about how many he buys.

As Youngstown (Ohio) Christian coach Brian Marrow watched Tymere Dubose play basketball, he kept thinking what a superb football player he could be, too. “He is raw. Last year was his first year playing football, and he showed a lot. I talked him into playing football. I told him with his size and the way he moved on the basketball court, he could get something in football,” said Marrow. He got that, too, Saturday when he became the first football player from his school to commit to a Division I program - Kentucky.
