For the second year in a row, East Jessamine volleyball coach Steve Schweitzer and his Lady Jags are investing in the future of the program when it comes to talent. This spring, Schweitzer is once again running an intramural volleyball league at East Middle. The league has expanded from last year’s 50 players and six teams to eight teams made up of 67 girls in grades six through eight. “The main reason we’re doing this is to get some awareness about volleyball to the middle school,” Schweitzer said.

DANVILLE – Lincoln County coach Amanda Massey knew it would be tough to beat Boyle County for a third-straight time, especially as well as the Rebels had been playing. And Boyle was able to finally get a win at just the wrong time for the Patriots, pulling out a 25-22, 25-20 win Tuesday in the 45th District Tournament semifinals at Boyle. “The timing was bad for us just because this tournament came a a time when we were trying to regroup, and we just didn’t get it done in time,” Massey said.

The Admirals (7-14) actually led 4-0 to start the second game, but Johnson said Casey's serving "took over, and we made errors which cost us a bit. HARRODSBURG - It was one of the Burgin volleyball team's finest hours - and also one of its most disappointing. For a time Wednesday night, the Bulldogs were going toe to toe with the best team in the 12th Region in perhaps the best indicator yet of how far the region's youngest program has come in a relatively short time. It didn't last, however, as Southwestern recovered for a four-set victory in a 12th Region Tournament semifinal at Mercer County, bringing a sudden end to another successful season for Burgin.

STANFORD - Arienne Stephens has a lot to smile about. Stephens always seems to be smiling on the volleyball court these days, in part because she's having the time of her life. She is a rapidly improving player on one of the area's best teams, coming into her own just in time to help her Lincoln County team do the same. The junior middle blocker has become something of a killer at the net for Lincoln, even if she doesn't always look the part. She has the size and is developing the skill set, but the smile distracts from the fact that she has become one of the area's most imposing players.

NICHOLASVILLE - The Burgin volleyball team left here with something to build on, but that wasn't what the Bulldogs came for. Burgin was for an upset win that would give it a third straight district championship, but West Jessamine denied that with a four-set victory Thursday night in the 46th District Tournament championship at East Jessamine. The Bulldogs' consolation prize came in the way they delayed that defeat with a stirring rally in the third set of their 25-11, 25-21, 25-27, 25-14 loss.

STANFORD - It was the kind of match Billy Douglas would have loved. His daughter Samantha knew that, which is why she couldn't keep from crying Tuesday night after she and her Lincoln County teammates won the 45th District Tournament. Lincoln swept Boyle County in three sets to capture its first district title since 2006, riding the momentum of two significant streaks late in the second set and early in the third to a 25-23, 25-21, 25-13 victory. It was after the Patriots got their hands on the trophy and after the requisite photos were taken, that Samantha Douglas' emotions overtook her as she thought of her father, who died May 10 at age 57 after a battle with lymphoma.
