Hannah Harris scored 20 points to lead the Boyle County girls to a 79-55 victory over Harrison County on Wednesday in the first round of Western Hills' Lady Wolverine Christmas Tournament at Frankfort. Kalin Bottoms and Natalie Settle added nine points each for the Rebels (9-4), who outscored the Fillies 22-8 in the third quarter to take a 38-20 halftime lead. “It was just an overall good game out of everybody that played,” Boyle coach Greg Edwards said. “We did a real good job on defense, we set our traps well and battled on the boards and also exceuted our offense.” Boys Mercer County 71, Henry County 70, OT - At New Castle, Cody Pike hit a last-second 3-point shot in overtime to lift Mercer (4-7)

Garrett Caudill ran for two touchdowns and Billy Abney threw for two scores and ran for another Friday night as Garrard¿County rolled over Western Hills 48-0 in Frankfort. The win moves Garrard to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in¿Class AAA, District 5. Abney was 7 of 11 passing for 139 yards and had a 20-yard touchdown run. Caudill ran for 52 yards and two scores and caught one pass. Caudill scored on a 15-yard run and ran the conversion in for an 8-0 lead after a quarter. In the second quarter Abney had a 42-yard touchdown pass to Lane Cumby and a 24-yarder to Jacob Smith as the Golden Lions led 24-0 at the half.

Former Burgin coach Don Irvine scored a win against his old school Wednesday night, leading the Western Hills girls to a 61-55 victory over Burgin at Frankfort. Irvine was coaching against a Burgin team for the first time since he retired from the school in May. He came out of retirement in September to take over at Western Hills. Burgin (8-7) took a 42-41 lead into the fourth quarter, when Western Hills (6-7) outscored the Bulldogs 20-13. Randi Burke and Liz Marcinek led Burgin with 20 points each.

Hannah Miniard struck out 19 batters Wednesday to lead Boyle County to a 7-3 victory over Western Hills at Frankfort. Miniard allowed four hits and two walks and did not give up an earned run as she earned a complete-game victory in her season debut for Boyle (2-0). “Hannah pitched a great game despite the cold tonight,” Boyle coach Brian Deem said. The wind-chill factor hovered just above 30 degrees for the game. “I felt like we did a good job through the first five innings trying to stay focused through the cold and the wind,” Deem said.

Freshman Matt Raskin scored three times Tuesday to lead Mercer County to a 3-1 win at Western Hills to remain unbeaten. It was scoreless until Raskin scored in the 20th minute off a pass from Landon Souder. Four minutes later, Western Hills scored off of a throw-in to make it a 1-1 score at the half. "We asked the guys to pick up the pressure and use our possession skills more in the second half," Mercer coach Tim Shannon said. "And they did.” Eleven minutes into the second half, Tate Spivey sent a low pass through the Wolverine defense that Raskin put in for a 2-1 lead.

West Jessamine girls opened their season with some fireworks Saturday with a 76-72 double-overtime win over Western Hills. Lincoln County definitely had its chance against Western Hills on Wednesday. The Wolverines committed eight errors, but the Patriots managed just four hits and wasted scoring chances in a 3-2 loss in the Danville Spring Break Invitational. “We missed a lot of opportunities and we made an error or two that gave it back to them as well,” Lincoln coach Brad McNew said. Lincoln' best chances at a big inning came in the top of the fifth and sixth innings. In the sixth, Dylan King led off with a solo home run to left to cut Western Hills' lead to 3-2. After that, Austin Smith and Tyler Poynter reached on errors and Austin Greer had a bunt single to lead the bases.

The Danville boys bounced back from a loss to archrival Boyle County a night earlier with a 61-51 victory over Western Hills on Saturday night at Danville. Tryston Ford scored 23 points to lead the Admirals, who led 16-9 after one quartere and were never caught. Danville (10-12) was up 28-22 at halftime, and coach Andrew Zaheri said the reserves helped keep Western Hills (4-18) at bay in the third quarter. “Western Hills did a good job chipping away at the lead, and in the third quarter our bench sparked us,” Zaheri said.

The Boyle County boys are made up of quite a few moving parts, so it's no wonder it took a little time for all of those parts to start working properly together. From experienced players to newcomers, players of all types are contributing to the Rebels' success, just as they did Thursday night when Boyle edged Western Hills 4-3 at Rebel Stadium. A freshman, two sophomores and a senior foreign exchange student scored for Boyle. In addition, a junior, two seniors and the same exchange student had assists and a senior and two juniors led the way on defense to protect the Rebels' lead late in the game.

STANFORD - When he was a sophomore, Lincoln County's Tanner Leigh was put into the starting lineup. That's the confidence Lincoln coach Brad McNew had then in Leigh, now a senior and one of the leaders for a Patriots squad looking to make the 12th regional tournament for a third straight year. “I'm always trying to be prepared in each situation - where to be in each situation and how to react when the ball is pitched each and every pitch,” said Leigh, who feels he is a smarter player now, which has helped him become a better player.

Cassidy Martin scored 26 points Tuesday night to lead the Mercer County girls to a 66-57 victory over Wayne County in the Titans' final home game of the season at Harrodsburg. Mercer (21-8), playing its fourth game in five days, pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring Wayne 23-13 to take a 41-27 halftime lead and keeping the Cardinals at bay in the second half. “We didn't play particularly well ... but I think we're a little gassed,” Mercer coach Chris Souder said. “We'll take the win ... and we'll use tomorrow to rest up a little bit and try to get our legs back and be ready to go again Thursday at Southwestern.” Catheryne Claunch scored 13 points and Heidi Huffman added 11 for Mercer, which shot just 33 percent (20 for 60)

Haley Robey had two top-10 finishes for the Boyle County girls on Saturday in the Laker Fall Preview at Russell Springs. Robey was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and seventh in the 100 butterfly. RICHMOND - Rachel Pingleton and Caroline McDonald each shot 80 to lead Boyle County to a win in the Madison Central Invitational at Gibson Bay Golf Club Sunday. Boyle had a 346 team total - 15 shots better than second-place Dunbar. Western Hills was third at 371 and Anderson County fourth at 372. Michaela Jarmon had a 92 for Boyle while Samantha Stewart shot 94, Alexis Draut 96 and Taylor Thompson 97. The low four scores counted in the team total. Elsa Moberly of Pulaski County was the medalist with a 2-under par 70. Megan Kinney from Western Hills shot 73. Pingleton and McDonald tied for third.

J.B. Williams battled through the rain on the front nine Saturday to shoot a 4-under par 67 and win the title at the All “A”¿Classic state golf tournament at Eagle's Nest Country Club in Somerset. Danville coach Marc Williams said Danville “was glad that their coach had forced them to finish a practice round in the rain last Sunday. They were wet and wanted to just pack it in.” Williams had the only sub par round Saturday. Andrew McKinney shot a 2-over par 73 and finished tied for second and Spencer McKinney tied for ninth with his 77. Nick¿Serey was in an automobile accident on Friday and did not play Saturday.
