DANVILLE - Lincoln's bid to defeat the unbeaten Wayne County Cardinals fell flat Monday as the Patriots stumbled 6-4 in the Danville Spring Break Invitational.  The Patriots (4-5) opened a 2-0 lead over the Cardinals in the first inning, but Wayne (7-0) put up runs in the second through fifth innings to earn the win. “Honestly, we just came out a little flat. We didn't pitch as well, and we didn't get hits with runners on base, and you can't win ball games when you do that,” Lincoln coach Brad McNew said.

Garrard County coach Ed Rall said his team had enough offense to win games, but the Golden Lions just needed pitching. They got plenty of both Wednesday at Danville, as sophomore Jacob Fain tossed a complete-game four-hitter in the Lions' 12-2 victory. Fain struck out four and walked two, and never let the Admirals (16-8, 4-2) get the big inning.

BURGIN - It's been quite the turnaround year for the Garrard County softball team. A year ago, the Golden Lions were in the midst of a two-win season with a team full of freshmen and eighth-graders. But after their 18-0 win Tuesday over Burgin, the Lions are one of the hottest teams in the 12th Region, having won five straight nine of their last 10 to sit at 23-12. “They've just got a lot more confidence and they're grown up as ball players. They're doing a million times better than I thought they would, and we're just becoming a better team,” said Garrard's only senior, outfielder Sydney Pozzuto, who drove in two runs Tuesday.

Mercer County pulled away late Tuesday, then nearly let Danville take it all away. The Titans scored seven runs in the final two innings, but Danville scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded before making the final out in an 8-5 win for Mercer at Troy Trumbo Field. “Up until that seventh inning, I thought Megan Hilbert pitched well, our defense played good defense. We're a real young team, so we got a little tight. And once we got there in that seventh - and Danville did a good job putting those bloop shots in the right place and making us work - we tightened up a little bit and gave up some runs we shouldn't have,” Mercer coach Michael Shewmaker said.

Defense continues to haunt the Danville baseball team. The Admirals committed four errors Tuesday, but also took advantage of four Mason County errors to post a 9-6 win in the Danville Spring Break Invitational at Admiral Field. “Right now, we're not very good defensively, for whatever reason. We thought that was going to be our strong suit coming ito the year. We made some changes there, and I guess that's how we're going to have to play,” Danville coach Paul Morse said.
