The city of Wilmore got relatively lucky in dealing with Tuesday and Wednesday's ice storm. The city has not reported any major damage to homes or power lines, and Police Chief Steve Boven said there have not been any accidents reported. The transmission on Wilmore's only snow plow and salt spreader, however, did go out Tuesday morning, but city workers found a replacement in Lexington and installed it in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, making it available for use during the worst of the mess.

To the editor, I read the article in The Jessamine Journal a few weeks ago about Wilmore reevaluating utility rates with a proposed increase of 10 percent this year. That seems like a pretty steep hike. The article made me recall another story in The Journal a couple of months back about Wilmore's new water meters. It stated that the new meters were raising revenues by more accurately reflecting usage. So, the city is collecting more revenue with the new meters and now they are going to compound that by raising rates on water and sewer another 10 percent in a single year?

The tinkling of well-tempered chimes and the smell of homemade soaps, greet customers as they enter The Front Room, a shop owned by Linda Goepper. The tiny shop is titled appropriately, as it's setup in the front room of Goepper's house on Main Street in Wilmore. Goepper was inspired to originally sell mostly antiques and art but according to her, antiques just aren't doing well in the market with the way the economy has been lately. "I'm new at this," she said. "I'm just learning what the customers like.

Wilmore will get a chance to showcase its historic Main Street next Thursday when the city teams up with Stanford in a downtown exchange program. The program, initiated by the Kentucky Heritage Council, is designed to show people the advantages of living downtown, which, according to Wilmore Community Development Director Margaret Morgan, is one of the best ways to revitalize a downtown area. "It gives a ready audience downtown to shop in the stores and visit the restaurants," she said.

Totally disoriented by a sudden change in surroundings, when Dorothy landed in Oz she famously uttered, "I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore. " I had somewhat the same sense of disorientation last week when I read two Journal headlines I never thought I'd see: "Bank robber on the loose," and "Wilmore drug roundup. " These news stories would hardly prompt a disinterested glance in newspapers located in major cities, but in Wilmore they are big news. I am aware that drugs have been a problem in Wilmore for quite awhile, but the "roundup" of four men shocked me a little.
