The fourth annual Salvation Army benefit concert on June 22 will feature gospel bands traveling from Georgia and Tennessee to Central Baptist Church in Winchester to perform. Brian Free and Assurance - a four-man group out of Georgia whose front man has been on the southern gospel music map since 1982 - will be among them. He first joined a group called Gold City Quartet, then ventured out to create his own group, Assurance. According to their website, he and the band have received many honors for their contributions to the gospel genre, including Favorite Male Singer, Favorite Tenor (eight times)

Dr. Glendon and Joyce McAllister Barnes will celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary. They were married June 19, 1949 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Barnes brought his family to Winchester in August 1967. They have three sons, Dr. Robert Barnes of Winchester, Dr. David Barnes of Stanton and Steve Barnes of Lexington. They have four children and three great-grandchildren. Dr. Barnes is a retired doctor of chiropractic and had his practice in Winchester for 33 years. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes will celebrate with a family party at their home on June 23.

Beulah Mae Perkins Brandenburg Murray, 89, of Winchester, widow of Marion Murray, passed away Wednesday at her home. A native of Richmond, she was born Feb. 2, 1924, to the late Elza and Lilly Long Perkins. She was the manager of One Hour Dry Cleaners in Lexington, member of Forest Grove Christian Church and Sr. Saints Sunday School Class. Beulah was a beloved story teller who charmed many and was cherished by family and all who knew her. She is survived by one son, Harry Brandenburg of Lexington; daughters, Sheila Bryant of Franklin, Ohio, Pamela (John)

Five Boy Scouts from Winchester and Clark County left Thursday to begin “Operation Husky,” an 8,000-mile tour of North America. They are Ross Reaser, Eddie Reed, Paul Rogers, George Jordan and Lee Kidd. The boys are from Troop Number 263 and are among 29 Boy Scouts and five Scoutmasters from Lexington, Winchester and Raleigh, N.C. making the tour. The group will visit Washington, D.C., New York City, Canada, Alaska, Hollywood, Disneyland and Mexico. Robert L. Baldwin, Winchester, is among 59 students in the University of Kentucky Department of Civil Engineering encamped at Levi Jackson State Park near London.

ALICE RENEE THOMAS Elizabeth Neal and Derrick Thomas announce the birth of their daughter, Alice Renee Thomas. She was born June 8 at Clark Regional Medical Center. Her grandparents are Jennifer Neal, James Neal, Leah Rawlins and Paul Thomas. BENTLEY RAYMOND CURTIS LAMB Elizabeth Mae Farmer and Chadwick Curtis Lamb announce the birth of their son, Bentley Raymond Curtis Lamb. He was born June 10 at Clark Regional Medical Center. His grandparents are Dennis and Rebecca Mayes, Marcey Boone and Jeff Lamb, all of Winchester.

The future of the Winchester YMCA is looking a little brighter thanks to recent surges in memberships and community donations. Interim Director Michael Haynes said he expects the YMCA to have enough funds to remain sustainable at the end of a 90-day trial period. Haynes was brought to the local facility in May to help improve its financial standing and allow the board of directors to hire a permanent director. As a former state YMCA employee, Haynes now travels to troubled YMCAs throughout the state.

Buford T. Horton, 91, of Winchester, husband for 68 years to Thelma Chambers Horton, passed away at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the Clark Regional Medical Center. A native of Clark County, he was the son of the late Rev. Z.A. and Mildred Osborne Horton. Buford was a captain in the United States 8th Airforce with 27 missions over Germany during WWII. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Rank 1 in Educational Administration. He taught in Indiana, Florida and Kentucky; he taught locally in Clark County at Central Elementary and Conkwright Middle School.

Julia Hannah Waddell Boggs, 80, of Winchester, passed away on June 10, 2013. Julia was born April 27, 1933, in Elliot County, Kentucky. She is the youngest child of the late Charles and Dovie Waddell. After a very successful career in retail sales, Julia retired to spend time with her family and loved ones. She spent her time volunteering at Clark Regional Hospital. She is survived by Justin Boggs (Rebecca Boggs), Mark Boggs (Leigh Cielenksy), Lisa Hamilton (David Hamilton), and Dr. Robin Choquette; sister, Alma Reuter; and 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
