by Nancy LeedyEmily Fox scored 24 points and Sydney Harris had 19 points and nine rebounds as Lincoln used a 37-9 run to break open a close game and defeat visiting Woodford County 78-59 Monday.A competitive game through most of the first half, the Lady Patriots got things rolling late in the second quarter, scoring the last nine points to turn a 34-28 deficit into a 37-34 halftime lead. The game-changing run rolled on into the second half. Buoyed by a triple and 11 points from Fox and 10 from Harris, Lincoln found itself comfortably ahead 65-43 with just 4:45 remaining in the game.“I'm proud of the girls,” Lincoln coach Cassandra McWhorter said.

George Rogers Clark tried to duplicate its previous performance Tuesday night at Norton Gymnasium. The Cardinals, who fell behind by 18 points and then rallied for a 64-59 victory over Dixie Heights last Saturday, staged a late comeback again, but came up short in a 53-49 loss to surging Woodford County. The setback was the second in the past four games for Clark, which had a 17-game winning streak snapped at Rowan County last week in Morehead. “I could see this one coming a mile away,” Clark coach Scott Humphrey said afterward.

Laken Grey had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds Saturday to lead the Danville girls to a 54-47 win over visiting Woodford County. Kasey Young had 12 points, Essence Grey had nine points, seven assists and five steals, and Jordan Leavell had seven points and eight boards for the Admirals (11-5). Rhodes Bell and Elliott Porter of Danville won championships in their weight classes Friday in the Woodford County Invitational at Versailles. Both won close decisions in their respective championship matches, and Daniel Lannum finished fourth in his division to give Danville a total of three medalists in the two-day, 28-team tournament. Bell defeated Chad Goodrich of Woodford 5-3 in the finals of the 170-pound class for his second win of the day and the fifth in the tournament.

The Jaguars were able to open the KFC Holiday Classic with a win Tuesday night. East Jessamine (8-1) edged Clay County 65-62. The tournament, which is being played at McCreary County, will run through Wednesday. The Jaguars played again on Wednesday; however, results were not available at press time. East was also scheduled to play on Thursday. Opponents had not been listed as of Wednesday morning. East was able to rebound from a Woodford County loss Friday and defeat Frankfort 82-72 Saturday, breaking the 80-point mark for the first time this season.

Benton Girdler of Danville set a meet record in one of his two event wins Saturday in the Woodford County Invitational at Versailles. Girdler won the boys 100-yard freestyle in 49.31 seconds, breaking the 5-year-old record of 49.40. He also won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.62. Danville's Chappie Couzens finished third in the boys 100 breastroke for the only other individual top-10 finish by an area swimmer in the meet, which attracted more than 20 teams. The Admirals were also in the top 10 in two relays.

The West Jessamine football team's regular season came to a close on Friday with a 44-14 loss to Woodford County. The loss comes after the Colts' first win of the year, a shocker against rival East Jessamine. They end the regular season at 1-9 overall and 1-4 in the district. The Colts went into the locker room at halftime of Friday's game tied 7-7 with the Yellowjackets with the help of an 18-yard touchdown run by Ryan Horne late in the first quarter. But the second half was dominated by Woodford, which went on a 30-point tear to take a 37-7 lead.

In its first district game of the season, East Jessamine defeated  Woodford  County 21-0. Cameron Thomas rushed for three touchdowns and 191 yards. The Jaguars picked up 297 yards on the ground utilizing seven different ball carriers. The defense dominated in its first shutout of the season, holding the Yellow Jackets to 95 total yards of offense. The loss was Woodford's first of the season. East improves  to 4-1, winning its fourth straight game.
