The issues in a zoning battle now taking place in the western Kentucky town of Mayfield could spread to other Kentucky communities, including those in this region. For while Mayfield may be one of the first small Kentucky towns in which Muslims are attempting to locate a mosque, the diversification of this nation eventually means that mosques could be located in communities across the state. While opponents of the Mayfield mosque may think they are fighting to keep a Muslim community from worshipping in their town, what’s really at stake is whether the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of worship means exactly what it says.

Dear Editor, How ironic that, in the midst of an unprecedented community-wide revival, an editorial would arise incriminating recent religious trends. While not overtly critical, underlying negative insinuations regarding a trend away from centuries-old worship traditions were obvious. While we, the people as the church, owe an impossible debt to the creators and perpetuators of that very tradition, recent local events have underscored the diverse means by which bringing praise and glory to God can be achieved.

Editor's note: This is the first installment in a two-part series showcasing two of the area churches that hold weekday morning services. Today's story is about Trinity Episcopal Church of Danville. The story on Jan. 23 will focus on SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Danville. It was a few minutes before 7 a.m. on a recent Tuesday in downtown Danville. Except for the street lights, traffic signals and the headlights of the few motorists on the street, there was little illumination in the cold, dark heart of the city.

Flip to page three of the newspaper - there it is. The police log from a couple nights prior: "11:43 p.m. 100 block N. Main St. Suspicious situation. " The police car approached a man walking down the street with tears flowing down his face: "Son, is everything all right?" The man explained everything to the police officer just as a second car arrived. As they left, no arrests made, one of the officers said, "Boy you really caused a lot of commotion. " The man wasn't drunk and no crimes were committed.

Dear Editor, The Unity in the Community Revival meetings were truly a success by any standard. People from different backgrounds, churches and worship styles joined together and worshiped God with one another. Not only did they worship together, but they followed in the great church model set in the book of Acts, meeting the needs of the less fortunate. The Salvation Army was one of the groups chosen to receive a very generous gift from the offerings from this revival. I want to take this time and thank each and every person who was involved with this and encourage you to keep the unity in worship, fellowship and helping those in need.

John 4:13-26: Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” She has gone from interest to now want, but her want is still upon the physical. She is thinking the material water, Jesus is leading her from a well that not only quenches the thirst of physical body, but water that supernaturally springs up into everlasting life.

It was pretty obvious something other than a normal worship service was going on Sunday at the Danville campus of Southland Christian Church. Hardly a somber bunch on a regular Sunday, the congregation this day was buzzing with activity, the church filled to the rafters with shouts and music, and … is that Michael Jackson? “Yes, that's Michael Jackson,” Danville pastor Dave Rizer says of the music. “We are doing this as an act of worship today. And the shout is for each box that gets filled.” The Danville campus of Southland Christian Church is partnering with Lifeline Christian Mission to pack boxes with meals to deliver to Haiti.

Christmas is coming. It’s not about Hollywood, Walt Disney World, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy. No, and a thousand times no. It’s about the only begotten son of God, the Great Almighty, the great one and only “I Am.” For God so loved the world, he gave us his only begotten son, so that whosoever would believe in Him, would not perish, but receive eternal life. Let everything that lives and breathes worship Jesus Christ this Christmas. M. Wendell Anderson Danville

The fifth annual Unity in the Community revival series will be held in February instead of November. Organizers concluded that the week-long series of interdenominational and interracial worship services has conflicted with Thanksgiving-related services and programs at many Danville area churches, said publicity coordinator Lonnie Harp. The Rev. Tom Lane, pastor of Cornerstone Assembly of God and chairman of the steering committee, said the committee decided to look at the date after last year’s program.
