Sensing a community up in arms over the consolidation of polling places in Boyle County, local Republicans have put forth a last-minute write-in candidate to challenge incumbent County Clerk Denise Curtsinger. Cindi Davidson, a 41-year-old medical transcriptionist, filed her candidacy papers Friday in Curtsinger's office, just 18 days before the Nov. 7 election. Democrat Curtsinger, who had been unchallenged in seeking her second full, four-year term in the job that pays about $60,000, shrugged off the 11th-hour challenge and said she planned no special strategy to fend off the surprise competition.

BURGIN - When the votes are counted Tuesday night, Burgin residents still will not have a full complement of city council members to fill the six seats. That's because only five people filed for election, and one of them is a write-in candidate. Incumbents Christine McGrath, Joey Delton Hardin and Terry Pitman are seeking re-election, and their names will be on the ballot, along with that of Mary Margaret Heaton, a newcomer to city government. A fourth incumbent, Bobby Royalty, has registered as a write-in candidate but his name will not appear on the ballot.

The recent death of Burgin City Council member Bobby Gene Royalty will require the council to appoint his replacement after the first of the year. Council members already were going to have to name a member because only five people ran for the six-member board in the November elections, Councilman Terry Pitman said before the elections. Royalty was one of those, although his election was as a write-in candidate and his name did not appear on the ballot.

Boyle County Clerk Denise Curtsinger issued a statement this morning disputing a report Sunday that she suggested that her opponent, write-in candidate Cindy Davidson, a Republican, might not be ready for the duties of the office. "The comment was not said," Curtsinger wrote in her statement. "I said there is more to this office than just elections. The implication that I may degrade anyone in order to win an election is absurd. I have never involved myself in that type of campaign and I will not start now. Every candidate that runs for any office should be taken serious.
