The start of the gridiron season is over two months away but, in just seven days, the "Death Valley" field will be swarming with young athletes. The cause for commotion at the LCHS football field is the annual Lincoln County Youth Football Camp, which will be held June 14-16 at Lincoln County High School. The non-contact camp is open to all students in first through ninth grade and runs from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. each day. The cost of the camp is $35 per camper or $50 per two siblings.

HARRODSBURG - When Terry Yeast was planning the first Harrodsburg Youth Football Camp, he thought it would attract about 25 kids and then he would build it up from there. Well, he must have underestimated how much kids want some summertime football. There were 35 kids at Harrodsburg Wednesday, up from 29 the day before, a turnout that more than pleased the Pioneers' head coach. "I guess it's a credit to the kids that they enjoy what we're doing. I think a lot of kids are going home and telling their friends about the camp and they're coming back with them," Yeast said.

There are enough kids at this week's Boyle County Youth Basketball Camp to fill three gyms, but there's still plenty of room for girls. And not only are there girls at play in all three of those gyms, but for the first time there are also girls at work. Boyle County boys coach Ronnie Bottoms always staffs his camp with members of his own team, and this year he has added a dozen girls players to the roster. There is no girls camp at Boyle this year because of the transition in the girls program that was just completed last week with the hiring of Roger Newton as its new coach.

Danville coach Sam Harp said it’s always hard to tell exactly what kind of turnout he’ll get with his annual youth football camp. But with a good group coming out for the first night Monday, and an even larger crowd out Tuesday, Harp had few complaints about the numbers. “We’ve got 52 total. I think for this time of year, with baseball and everything going on, I do think it’s a good number,” Harp said. “We had some kids miss last night because of baseball, and some kids tonight leave because of baseball.
