First Baptist Church Black History event First Baptist Church, 37 N. Highland St., will have its annual Black History Program on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 5 p.m. in the Family Life Center. The youth group will perform a skit, “Called to Worship,” followed by “A Taste of Soul.” The public is invited to attend. Revival next month at Christian Baptist Christian Baptist Church, 14 Holly Ave., will host a revival March 16-19. Services will begin at 6 p.m. Special singers will perform each night and Brother Tommy Masters will preach.

Community and government leaders joined together with Clark County Community Education Program officials Monday to celebrate Winchester and Clark County’s selection as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People and some of the area’s youth for their community service projects. America’s Promise was started in 1997 by former Secretary of State Colin Powell to recognize communities that were working together on behalf of youth in their communities to address issues affecting young people.

Downtown streetscape work continues Construction will continue on the Oak to Walnut streets block with the installation of curbs. Electrical work will also continue from Walnut to Maple streets. Work will begin on the block from Maple to Chestnut streets with the removal of on-street parking and the shifting of traffic. Demolition will begin on the east side of Main Street between Maple and Chestnut streets later this week. Pedestrians are urged to use caution when using the sidewalks in downtown.

LANCASTER — Toilet humor isn’t usually a favorite topic of church-going folks, but it has been one of the most popular subjects among members of Victory Christian’s congregation for the past four weeks or so. The particular toilet being talked about is bright pink and has been showing up without warning in many different church members’ front yards. The wandering latrine is the brain child of Victory Christian’s youth minister Ricky Davis, who was looking for a way to raise money for youth group activities.

This year, 740 high school juniors from 46 high schools in Central Kentucky are being recognized in Youth Salute. The 29th awards ceremony was held in their honor on Sunday, May 3, at Midway College. A top Youth Leader was named for each high school, as well as Youth Leaders of the Year. Six all-expense paid trips to the National Leadership Workshop in St. Louis were announced along with $68,000 in scholarships and other awards. Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College and Midway College each provided $20,000 in scholarships.

CRAB ORCHARD - Hundreds turned out for Crab Orchard's annual July 4 parade on Saturday. The parade, which was held along Walnut Street and Stanford Road, featured hot rods, classic cars, tractors pulling floats, four-wheelers, dirt bikes, horses and much more. The parade is the traditional closing event for Crab Orchard's annual weekend-long July 4 celebration. Crab Orchard Mayor Bill Dyehouse said the parade has been around for close to 40 years now. Dyehouse said turnout this year was really good, though there have been bigger years.

Maybe it was the horrid humidity and heat, or the threat of storms. Or maybe it was just apathy. Whatever the reason, despite an intense media campaign and hundreds of hours spent by volunteers on organizing the event, talking it up to local churches and soliciting donations, only about 50 people turned out for Sleepless in Winchester. The overnight party at Lykins Park was intended to raise enough money to match a $50,000 challenge grant to Clark County Community Services to provide assistance for more than 500 homeless and precariously housed people in Clark County ?
