Positioned on the sideline of the pool at the Wiliam E. “Bunny” Davis Recreation Complex, Jennifer Osborne hops from foot to foot, then gyrates her hips while Latin music plays in the background. A group of eager students mimic her moves from their much-cooler positions in the pool. It’s time for water Zumba, the latest trend in the popular aerobic dance activity. “Kick, kick, now travel,” Osborne instructs. Occasionally, Osborne runs over and splashes in the water to provide some relief from the 95-degree temperatures.

Happy-go-lucky Zumba instructor June (Kimberly Shepherd) gets a number of surprises while on holiday in the Caribbean in Pioneer Playhouse's upcoming production of “Bottoms Up!” Director Robby Henson said “Bottoms Up!” is the second reprisal at the playhouse this season. The first was “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” Both shows were performed more than 10 years ago. “Both were plays that stuck in our memory for different reasons,” Henson explained. “'Picasso at the Lapine Agile' was chosen because it presented challenging ideas and played to the head.

For those looking to pick up some Latin dance moves and improve their overall health, McDowell Wellness Center has the ideal class with two enthusiastic instructors. Ann Mosley of Danville, a trainer and instructor at the center, sometimes is referred to as a "drill sergeant" by her co-workers. She decided to start Zumba in January, after taking several classes in Louisville and Lexington. Soon, Carrie Wilson of Stanford will team up with Mosley to teach the class twice a week in the center's aerobics studio.

When Jackie Tamminga took a “girls’ weekend” trip to Memphis with four of her friends from TammCor Fitness, it wasn’t just for the famous barbecue. They had another goal in mind in taking the trip — to work up a sweat with a good workout while raising money for the American Heart Association. And they got to participate in the fundraiser as performers in the halftime show for the Memphis Grizzlies vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA game on Feb. 5. The women donned their “party hearty” red tank tops and joined 155 other Zumba enthusiasts on center court.

Clark BoE calls special meetings The Clark County Board of Education will have special meetings Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11, at 6 p.m. at the Central Office regarding the superintendent selection. White Turley Road closing Monday The Clark County Road Department will be closing White Turley Road Monday for bridge replacement near the Clark and Montgomery county line. The Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department has seen significant growth during the last year, according to their programming and usage reports that compare program patron visits in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. Nearly every program run by Parks and Recreation increased their patrons, including sports, aquatic and land programming as well as the usage of the walking track, pool and gym. “We want to make sure we're making parks and programs family oriented and we're taking away negative elements,” said director Jeff Lewis.
